Gymnastic rings in India: buy them or DIY them for Rs. 900

Why rings

A few reasons, search the internet for more:

  • Functional strength. Rings are unstable. Every rep forces your stabilisers to work. The same pushup on a ring is a different exercise from a pushup on the floor.
  • They make hard exercises easier. Pullups, dips, muscle ups, rows: you can change the angle and instantly make them easier or harder. Best progressive overload tool I know.
  • Excellent for the core. Nothing trains anti-rotation and anti-extension like a rings session.
  • A genuine strength builder. Gymnasts built their physiques almost entirely on rings and bodyweight. That should tell you something.

Options in India

Decathlon

Domyos Cross Training Rings. Rs. 1,999 (MRP Rs. 2,999). Wooden rings, 4 m adjustable strap, 130 kg rated, 2 year warranty. The default option.

The Decathlon pair is the best value. The Amazon ones are fine, just pricier for similar quality.

DIY: Rs. 900 total

The straps on any ready-made pair are too short for low-to-the-ground moves in a 9 to 10 ft ceiling Indian flat. So I made my own.

You need four things:

Wooden rings A pair of plain wooden gymnastic rings, ~24 cm diameter. Local hardware is fine. Rs. 300
Cam buckles Fitcozi cam buckles sized to your webbing Rs. 250 (for 2)
Webbing Polyester webbing, 2 inch width. 1.5 inch works too, 2 inch is more stable and doesn't dig into the hands. Match the width to the cam buckle. Rs. 250
Carabiners Two locking carabiners. Optional but worth it. Rs. 100
Total Rs. 900

To assemble: thread a strap through a cam buckle, loop over the anchor, thread it back through, hang the ring (or a carabiner, then the ring). Cut straps to 2 x ceiling height minus 1 ft for usable length. No sewing, no tools.

Hanging them

Pull-up bar. Loop each strap over a doorway pull-up bar. Done. Best option for renters.

Ceiling. Use the same anchor fasteners used for jhoolas (indoor swings). Rs. 199 for a pack of 2, 250 kg rated, way more than you need. Ask a local contractor to drill and install. Mine charged Rs. 200 and finished in 10 minutes.

Tree. If you have a sturdy branch at about chest height, throw the straps over and you're training outdoors. A real branch on a mature tree handles your bodyweight with no issue. A gym with a view.
